Minnesota Department of Health Relies on Email & Federal Agency Leadership for Vital Pandemic Flu Communications
The Minnesota Department of Health's (MDH) mission is to protect, maintain and improve the health of all Minnesotans. The April 2009 outbreak of the H1N1 virus ("swine flu") became a global cause for concern and the Minnesota Department of Health quickly responded by creating a dedicated area on its website with up-to-date information and adding H1N1 news as a email alert topic.
MDH has always worked to stay on the cutting edge of communication, providing its residents multiple ways to keep informed, including offering email and text message alerts on health-related topics. MDH, along with a number of its federal counterparts, including the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), use GovDelivery to proactively communicate vital health information to the public.
In the two months since the H1N1 outbreak, MDH has sent more than 153,000 flu-related emails to subscribers. The agency has seen an increase in its subscribers since the flu outbreak, growing its subscriber base from just over 22,000 to more than 23,800 subscribers.
At the on-set of the pandemic flu crisis (April 27 - May 1, 2009) the CDC also saw a surge in the number of individuals interested in receiving email and text message alerts: new subscribers ranged from 12,000-20,000 people daily. During this same time period, email subscriptions to PandemicFlu.gov information shot up by more than 10x the normal rate due to higher interest and collaboration with CDC, FDA, and other partners. Average new subscribers exceeded 3,000 per day versus the previously established average of approximately 215. HHS also deployed a PandemicFlu.gov news widget streaming up-to-date information on the outbreak. Within the first two weeks over 240 web pages installed the widget. To-date, the widget has been viewed nearly 1.7 million times, by over 650,000 unique users across the U.S. and globally.
Since launching GovDelivery's Email and Digital Subscription Management solution in July 2004, MDH has sent more than 3.6 million emails, relating to more than 110 unique topics, to its now more than 24,000 subscribers.

Inaugural Excellence in Communication Award winners: The U.S. Government Printing Office and Washington Department of Transportation
Washington Department of Transportation Wins Excellence in Communication Award
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) was recognized by GovDelivery, at the recent Washington event, for Excellence in Communication. The award was presented during the event, on April 30, to WSDOT web coordinator, Jim Culp, for delivering more than 2.2 million messages to state residents within the first 6 months of service.
With nearly 5.9 million residents in Washington State, the Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has a large audience expecting up-to-date information on transportation issues such as construction projects and road closings. WSDOT replaced its unreliable system of more than 70 independent email distribution lists with GovDelivery's Email and Digital Subscription Management solution to automatically send email and text message updates on more than 160 unique topics.
Washington DOT was selected from the more than 130 state and local governments across the United States, that work with GovDelivery, as the inaugural winner of this award. Since launching the system in November 2008, Washington DOT has signed up nearly 35,000 subscribers and sent more than 2.6 million email alerts to its stakeholders, improving service and communication with the public.
