Communicate Flu-Related Updates through Multiple Channels

Flu.gov logo

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reports of widespread influenza activity in September are typically unusual and already 26 states in the U.S. are reporting such. The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and CDC are strongly urging state and local health officials, educational institutions, parents and caregivers to plan and prepare for the 2009 flu season as cases of H1N1 are expected to intensify.

The public looks to government health agencies for official health information. In an effort to reach the public with vital information regarding the H1N1 flu pandemic, government agencies send millions of official updates through GovDelivery's email and digital communication platform. Since the outbreak in late April 2009, over 22 million government email messages have been sent regarding H1N1 by CDC and HHS alone.

With the expectation of an incredibly harsh flu season, it’s more important than ever for organizations to be prepared to leverage multiple communication channels (email, text messaging, social media, etc.) to reach the largest possible audience.

The Excellence in Communications award recognizes government entities that demonstrate innovation and leadership in proactive government-to-citizen communication. The City of San Ramon (CA) was recently recognized for its Excellence in Communications. The award was presented during the League of California Cities Annual Conference in San Jose, on September 17. Vice-Mayor Dave Hudson accepted the award “for best California city implementation using email and social media to quickly build awareness, promote city services, and engage and inform city residents; reaching over 35% of city households within first 3 months of service.”

This is what happens when a city that is committed to communicating with their citizens works together with a strong company like GovDelivery," said Hudson. "We implemented GovDelivery in the matter of a couple of weeks and since that time our number of subscribers has continued to grow. GovDelivery is here to stay!

Event Summary: Mi-GMIS 2009 Annual Conference

Mi-GMIS logo

The annual Mi-GMIS (Michigan Government Management Information Sciences) conference was held on September 20-23 in Frankenmuth, Michigan. This year’s focus was "Succeeding in Challenging Times". Oakland County CIO, Phil Bertolini, presented on How to Increase Citizen and Business Traffic to your Website. With resident expectations at an all-time high, Oakland County uses innovative and cost-saving ways to increase citizen engagement, build community and offer better services on limited resources.

Oakland County announced last February a first-of-its-kind collaboration project, offering the GovDelivery service to all 62 of its municipalities free of charge. Oakland County envisions the service will work effectively across all levels of government to improve communication with its 1.2 million residents. (Currently, 15 municipalities are in various stages of implementation.)

Expanding this service to our municipalities is a great way for Oakland County to promote regionalism with local cities, villages and townships," Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said. "This service is also a great way to save taxpayer money by eliminating significant printing and mailing costs during these difficult times.

GovDelivery has helped Oakland County fulfill its mission of “increased efficiency and reduced costs… while providing better, faster access to government services.” More than 42,000 citizens have subscribe to Oakland County email and text message alerts, and more than 460,000 emails have been sent. In addition to enhanced communications with residents, the County has experienced huge costs savings of $268,000 annually on printing, folding and postage costs of traditional mailings.
