QUARTERLY TIP
Know Your Update Options: E-mail, Wireless Alerts, & RSS

As people get busier and are constantly bombarded with information, it becomes more important to communicate with citizens on their terms. GovDelivery enables government to communicate proactively with the public the right way. Subscribers can choose not only which updates they receive, but also how they receive them. GovDelivery offers users three different methods to receive updates: e-mail, wireless alerts and RSS.

E-mail is a part of day-to-day life for most Americans and is the number one use of the Internet. In fact, 134 million American adults use e-mail, with 64 million checking it on a daily basis. For that reason, e-mail is the primary update format supported by GovDelivery. Citizens who sign up to receive e-mail updates from you welcome your e-mails because they contain highly-specific updates that they have chosen to receive.

Wireless alerts are an effective way to reach people quickly about urgent and time sensitive matters. With 10.5 million adults sending or receiving text messages on a cell phone each day, wireless alerts are quickly becoming a popular update format and a great way to reach people on-the-go. (Pew Internet & American Life Project)

RSS allows citizens to view updates from you in their RSS readers. A small, but growing percentage of the population is embracing this emerging technology. GovDelivery allows you to easily add RSS feeds to your website to take advantage of this new format.
