  • Government Agencies, Counties, and Cities Use Email Alerts for Weather Emergency-related Events

When urgent events happen, government agencies must focus on responding quickly and effectively. Email can be used to distribute highly-targeted messages to a broad audience; it's capable of efficiently communicating detailed instructions that citizens need during and after emergencies, weather-related incidents or road closures. Email carries the added benefit of having a "viral" impact due to the ease of forwarding

FEMA Logo Since September 2007, FEMA has been offering email updates to reach thousands of people when urgent situations arise. To reach citizens in a specific region or location, FEMA utilizes GovDelivery's filter or query feature, allowing the agency to collect not only a subscriber's email address, but their zip code as well. With Hurricane Gustav set to make landfall earlier this September, FEMA utilized its email subscription service to inform 10,000 subscribers in six Gulf Coast states of hurricane-related updates. In the wake of the hurricane, FEMA also created a page on the agency's website to keep residents informed about the status of the storm and the government's preparations. The agency requested that subscribers forward the information to family and friends in the region.

Somerset County, New Jersey uses GovDelivery for flood-related county road and bridge closing and other weather-related announcements such as flood watches and warnings. Emergency alerts became the most popular subscription item when Somerset County experienced flash flooding and needed to alert residents of National Weather Service alerts, road closings and other urgent information.

During the October 2007 California wildfires more than 14,000 acres of land and more than 350 structures were destroyed in San Bernardino County alone. San Bernardino County published press releases informing residents of the declared local emergency, warning them of the smoke and its potential dangers, and drawing their attention to relief efforts for the fire victims. During the month of October the number of email subscribers experienced a 30 percent increase and GovDelivery sent out nearly 20,000 emails on behalf of the County.

Burns: The not so invisible hand

GovDelivery chief executive officer and co-founder Scott Burns wrote an opinion piece in response to a recent paper from Princeton University's Center for Information Technology Policy. Burns position paper was published by Federal Computer Weekly on August 4, 2008 and argues the importance of federal website managers in raising program awareness and improving the government-citizen relationship. Indiana Implements e-Subscription Management Service Statewide

    Indiana Logo

The state of Indiana announced its statewide implementation of GovDelivery's email subscription service. Indiana citizens, businesses and visitors can now find subscription options on more than 20 agency websites, including the Lieutenant Governor's Office, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Indiana State Police and Department of Workforce Development. Indiana plans to roll out the e-subscription service to 75 executive branch agencies and will work with legislative and judicial branches and separately elected officials.

"This communications tool allows us to quickly and efficiently deliver updates of user-selected information to the public. Real-time information sharing is critical to keeping the public informed, safe and healthy."
-Gerry Weaver, Indiana's chief information officer

On August 28th the Director of Communications for Indiana's Office of Technology, Mehgan O'Connor hosted a webinar - State of Indiana: Expanding eGovernment and Transforming the Way Government Agencies Serve the Public.

The webinar addressed Indiana's eGovernment initiatives to expand service to citizens while still addressing issues of tighter budgets, legacy systems and higher public expectations.

The state of Indiana implemented a complete site redesign creating a more customer-centered portal and consistent branding among all of Indiana's state agencies. And so, IN.gov was born. The state of Indiana then launched GovDelivery's Email and Digital Subscription Management service in an effort to expand its online services to make it easier for citizens to get the information they want and need. Indiana's "email wireless updates" service allows the state to reach out to the public proactively with automatic email and wireless device updates. This service also allows the state to leverage its website content for all agencies by cross-promoting each agency’s subscription items to all site visitors upon signup. Following implementation of GovDelivery, agencies experienced a 20% increase in website visits and savings of $2000 annually for small to medium size agencies, with upwards of $8000 for Indiana's larger state agencies.
